The Appalachian Trail is a hiking trail in the eastern U.S. that extends from Springer Mountain in Georgia toMount Katahdin in Maine, making it approximately 2,181 miles long. Along the way, the trail passes through Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The majority of the trail passes through wilderness areas, but some portions of the trail pass through towns or run alongside roads.
The Appalachian Trail is widely known and very popular among hikers. Some enjoy the trail so much that they attempt to travel the entire length in one season. There are even books, memoirs, web sites and fan organizations dedicated to this pursuit.
